Boy knifed friend making sandwich
A teenager who stabbed his 16-year-old friend through the heart told police he killed him by accident while making a sandwich, a court heard.

Luke Rychter, now 16, was drinking with a group of friends at his sister's house in Halifax, West Yorkshire, when he stabbed Grant Douglass in February.

A jury heard Grant did not realise he had been stabbed at first and laughed, but soon collapsed outside.

Luke denies one count of murder and is on trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Earlier incident

Patrick Palmer, prosecuting, said the boys had gathered at a house in Bracewell Bank last February, where one of them was babysitting four children.

He said the youths, who drunk lager and whisky, had described Luke as being "in a mood" all evening.

Some said he had been "kicking off" because he did not have any beer of his own, the court heard.

Mr Palmer said Luke, who was 15 at the time, took a kitchen knife out of a drawer and stabbed Grant.

The jury heard how earlier in the evening Luke had slashed another friend across the stomach with a knife, causing superficial injuries after the teenager had lifted his jumper saying he did not think the defendant was "man enough".

Cheese sandwich

Mr Palmer said there was no doubt that Luke Rychter had stabbed Grant, and the jury needed to consider his intent at the time.

The court was told that during interviews with the police, Luke said the stabbing was an accident.

Mr Palmer said: "Luke Rychter told the police that he'd been in the process of making a cheese sandwich.

"He claimed he'd taken a knife out of the sink and was turning to go towards the fridge for a block of cheese when Grant Douglass came past and fell upon the knife which was in Luke Rychter's hand."

The trial continues.[i]
